February 21st (that’s this Saturday!) kicks off the Atlanta Rollergirls’ 11th season, and if you hadn’t noticed, ARG’s home teams have been re-drafted. That’s right, the Apocalypstix, Denim Demons, Sake Tuyas, and Toxic Shocks are beginning the season fresh and ready to climb their way to the top. This means you will witness the FIRST game these skaters play with their new teammates, and you will experience the beginning of the Atlanta Rollergirls home team saga.
Winter training is over, and now the Apocalypstix and Sake Tuyas turn up the heat for the season opener. Last season we saw these teams face off twice, the Sakes winning the first round and the Stix winning the second, but all has changed. Since re-drafting, each team is starting with a clean record. Who will be the first to taste victory?
The Stix, led by Team Captain Queen Loseyateefa, have been practicing in their thunderdome, and now their strongest warriors have emerged ready for battle. Watch for jammers who can dance around edges and slice through defensive walls in a single bound. The Sakes, lead by Team Captain Switchblade Siouxsie, love winning so much, they’ve painted their helmets gold. These skaters won’t stop until they’ve won it all; they have tireless jammers and ruthless blockers. And if you were a fan of these teams last year, keep an eye out for similar faces fighting for the other side. Like, Hella Blitzgerald now blocking for the Stix, and The Boss and Rudy Huxtabrawl now swinging for the Sakes.
The season opener’s second game is the face-off we’ve been waiting for since last year’s championships: Denim Demons v. Toxic Shocks. Last year at Champs, the Demons took the lead at the final jam in a sweeping 20+ scoring run by returning jammer, ChokeCherry. Even with the re-draft, emotions are high anticipating this colossal re-match.
The Denim Demons are led this season by Team Captain Nattie Longlegs, who was on last year’s Shocks roster. Now Longlegs is training her defense to be soul crushing, and her offense to take no prisoners against her old team and new rivals. The Shocks are led by transfer and Team USA skater, Baller Shot Caller, who is being assisted by returning Shock, Rebel Yellow, and ex-Demon, Lez Dispenser. The rivalries are heating up as these new teams draw their lines in the sand. Who will we see take the first step?
