February 28, 2009: ARG Season Opener

Bout One: DSDG (Atlanta’s All-Stars) 114 vs. SCDD (Pittsburgh, PA) 145

The first half found the Atlanta and Pittsburgh teams very evenly matched. After some strong Power Jams (the opposing jammer in the box) for Atlanta they ended the half in the lead 64-40. But, in the last few jams two of Atlanta’s Jammers were pulled from the game by the EMTs; Belle of the Brawl with a dislocated shoulder, and Thunder Enlightenin’ with severe dehydration.

In the second half, Steel City rallied and pulled ahead after a few Power Jams of their own, bringing the score to 135-100 with 3 minutes left in the game. Atlanta’s The Merchant of Menace had a 14 point Jam and closed the lead to 135-114, but Steel City stayed strong and ended the game with the final score 145-114.

Athena received the MVP for Steel City, and Sk8 Outta Compton received the MVP for the Dirty South Derby Girls.

Bout Two: Toxic Shocks 124 vs. Apocalypstix 94

The Shocks’ Amelia Scareheart, The Merchant of Menace, Rebel Yellow (subbing from the Denim Demons), and Sk8 Outta Compton along with the Stix’ Shannihilator were all playing their second bout of the evening: an extremely exhausting task. Both teams sported promising rookies; Low Lita, Mollye Murder, Chopper Bleed, Meanie Ripherton (subbing from the Sake Tuyas), and Harper Lethal (subbing from the Denim Demons) on the Shocks’ side; Regreta Garbo, ShEbola, and Dark Crystal (subbing from the Sake Tuyas) on the Stix side.

The game was a well matched face-off with strong plays and hits from both sides. Each team battled for the lead in the first half with the top score bouncing back and forth. At the half-time whistle the Stix were ahead 52-50. But in true Shocks fashion, they made a strong come back in the second half with three big Power Jams and won the game 124 to 94.

MVPs were awarded to The Merchant of Menace (Shocks) and Deathskull (Stix) for their impressive jamming.
