March 28, 2009: Blood, Sweat, and Fishnet

Bout One: Denim Demons 123 vs. Sake Tuyas 85
The Sake Tuyas came to their first bout of the season prepared to show off their revamped team, including four new, hard-working rookies, and take down last year’s second place Denim Demons. But these Demons are not the same team as last season either. In the off-season the Demons lost nine veteran players to the All Star Team and retirement. To recoup, they took on transfers from other teams, other leagues and added five new rookies. With so many unknown factors – and almost half of each team made up of rookies – the outcome of this game was anybody’s guess! Both teams fought hard, but the Demons prevailed winning 123 to 85, and proving that their shiny new roster is indeed a force to be reckoned with.
MVPs were awarded to Canna Whoopass (Demons) and Nora Gretz (Sakes) for their impressive playing.
Bout Two: Atlanta Rumble Bs 95 vs. Jacksonville Rollergirls 89
Talk about some nail-bitting roller derby action! The debut home game of Atlanta’s B-Team, the Rumble Bs, came down to the very last jam. The skills of jammers such as Jacksonville’s Meow Mix Yo’ Face Up and Atlanta’s Deathskull, forced the lead position to switch consistently from team to team. But, with just a few minutes left on the clock, Jacksonville’s jammer was sent to the box twice in a row allowing the Rumble Bs the opportunity to reclaim the lead. Both teams fought relentlessly until the final buzzer, but Atlanta’s B-Team prevailed in the end, winning the game 95 to 89.
